It's also only the third year that the soil has been out of conventional farming techniques that robbed it of much of it's nutrition, organic matter, and proper structure. That means that the soil still needs a lot of improvement! Last year there were A LOT of harmful insects and weeds in the field, this is one indicator that the soil needs improvement. Healthy soil will be full of beneficial insects and not as weedy... and boy, would we LOVE to have more good bugs and less weeds! Also, healthier soil will, in turn, produce healthier plants that are more nutrient dense. So, we have established that improving our soil quality is a high priority at SEEDS Farm. Improving soil is a long and committed process and we're in it for the long haul.<br />
<br />
The first step to improving the soil is to get a soil test! We are actively working with a local company that only takes soil tests and assists farmers in developing a plan for improving their soil quality, Midwestern BioAg. Steve is the representative that we have been working with and he's been fantastic so far! Midwestern BioAg's mission is to educate the farmer about soil quality, not just take a test and tell them what to do. Learning how to decipher a soil test has been a fun and challenging experience. We're definitely moving in the right direction.<br />
<br />
A few main steps that we will forever take now are to add compost, add manure, and cover crop! About a month ago we rototilled the field, broadcast oats by hand (thank you many interns!), and then covered them up by running a cultivator through the field. The oats are now a few inches high and next week we will till them in, let the field rest for a few days, and then spread 3-5 tons of composted manure blended with a fertilizer mix and some other necessary soil ammendments to 3 acres of land. Whew! Improving the soil is a lot of work but well worth it! <br />

</div>Each year we will continue to actively improve our soil and watch the birds, bees, worms, and more happy bugs flock to the field. We will continue to educate ourselves about the importance of soil health and the steps needed to improve the soil, we hope to be stewards of the land and be available to assist others who too decide that soil health is a top priority.SEEDS Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06466503799908659382noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697748231257220095.post-31698825975957598892012-04-14T22:02:00.000-07:002012-04-14T22:02:50.447-07:00The Children's GardenWe are so excited to be developing a Children's Garden this season that will continually evolve for years to come. We're starting out this year by building it in a 50'x50' space in the field and it consists of several raised beds. The intention is for it to grow whimsical and funky and change over time with the many hands that will be tending the beds and soil. So much learning and so much fun and expression will take place here, it's all very exciting!<br />
<br />
We've purchased seeds for the Children's Garden (CG) that are fun and different such as fuzzy tomatoes, mini chocolate bell peppers, Tom's Thumb peas, and so forth. The first plantings in the garden will take place at our Spring Celebration on May 5th. This is a party that is hosted by both SEEDS Farm and Laughing Loon Farm where we will give farm tours, eat good food, meet neighbors and friends, and get the Children's Garden started!<br />
<br />
We will be connecting with a 3rd grade classroom from Greenvale Elementary School that will aid in the CG. First the SEEDS Farm Manager, Monica, and two of the spring interns, Lara & Gabe, will be teaching a lesson about the importance of compost at the school and then a week or so later the students will take a field trip to the farm to plant seeds and transplants in the CG (with the help of some compost, of course!). SEEDS Farm will also be working with Bridgewater Elementary students who are part of their summer program throughout the season in the CG.<br />
<br />
Oh, and of course all of our lovely Community Farmers who have kid's will be working in the CG every single week! It is so neat to offer their kids the opportunity to take ownership over a piece of the farm.<br />
<br />
The Children's Garden would not be possible without the help of one of our very dedicated volunteers, Daron. He is out in the field several days a week offering his expertise (& tools!) to the venture. Wow, are we thankful for him! <br />
<br />
We hope to see you out at the farm soon, and bring your kids!... SEEDS Farm has the perfect spot for them to dig in the dirt~<br />

We're sharing space with Laughing Loon Farm, and between the two of us, we'll be spilling out of the greenhouse in the next couple of weeks here. Good news is that everything is germinating and growing strong. A while back we planted all of our onions and leeks, we moved onto broccoli, cabbage, kale, greens, herbs and now we've even planted our heat loving plants such as eggplants, peppers and tomatoes (and oh soooo many more in between!). <br />
<br />
The greenhouse is fantastic because we can control the heat on the inside, when it's below 60 degrees the heater kicks on and warms the space, when it's above 80 degrees the vents open and the fan blows. Very cool. Back in February we built a whole lot of tables with the help of several volunteers and interns. The tables consist of cement blocks for supports and 16' cattle panels for the table. They're working out quite nicely, they're very stable but noooot completely flat so there's some high and low points. But, hey, the plants don't seem to mind too much!<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures of our greenhouse and lovely seedlings this year:<br />

We're excited to be gearing up for our third year, and looking back, it's incredible how far SEEDS Farm has come in the past couple of years. For starters, last year we built a 30'x60' greenhouse and a glorious root cellar. Both of these structures will be incredibly useful this year for starting our season with seeds in the greenhouse to extending the season with long-term storage for our root vegetables.<br />
<br />
Well, for starters, I'm Monica, the new Farm Manager this season, and I am very excited to get the season rolling. I come to the farm with experience running my own farm, managing a farmers market, and as an education and community activist. We've already hired a wonderful family as our full-time employees, the Riley's with husband John, wife Jena, and two wonderful children, Matthew and Jane. We have a crew of three interns from St. Olaf for the spring semester: Gabe, Lara, and Melina and a crew of three farm mentees from Carleton College: Anna, Sara, and Sophie. It's been a blast getting to know everyone that's involved with the farm this season, the more the merrier! <br />
<br />
This season we'll continue to share our land with the Rural Enterprise Center's, "Agripreneur Training Center", it's a wonderful non-profit that is focused on creating economic opportunities for rural Latino families. You can learn more about their approach and their "Grow a Farmer" program <a href="http://www.ruralec.com/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
We are also excited to be sharing our land with a new farm, Laughing Loon Farm, that is run by farmer Dayna Burtness. LLF grows wonderful vegetables that are sold at many restaurants in and around the Twin Cities, you can learn more about the farm <a href="http://www.laughingloonfarm.com/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
SEEDS Farm this season will be farming approximately 3 acres of tasty sustainably grown vegetables as well as raising some pigs and 50 laying hens. We will be selling most of our produce to Bon Appetit which serves St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges and will also have a Market Stand on-site at the farm. This year we'll continue to grow our Communal Farmer program, so every week many individuals and families will be logging work hours on the farm with the wonderful return of fresh picked good food. There will also be some community garden plots, 20 of these plots are folks coming over from Faith Gardens, a community garden run by the Community Action Center. Oh, and we're establishing a beautiful "Children's Garden" and are excited to extend our outreach and education opportunities for students of all ages (including us adults, one can never stop learning!). And so so so much more... !<br />
<br />
We've started our seeds, the onions are growing strong and eggplants and broccoli raab have just germinated. This season's been unseasonably warm, it's wet outside right now, but as soon as we get a short dry spell we'll be out in the field planting some cool season crops already, these are our peas, radishes, spinach, kale, etc.<br />

It came quite early, Sept. 14. Average for this region is beginning of October! A visitor this summer said to us 'may the frost come late enough so that you may reap the benefits of your labor, but soon enough so that you do not work yourselves too hard.' Well, I believe it's come a bit too soon! </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">We harvested in a frenzy today, picking all the crops that will not survive a light frost such as celery, eggplant, peppers, basil, cucumbers, tomatoes, melons and squash. The rest of the crops should be able to tolerate tonights frost. The tomatoes...now, they're another story! We decided to make a quick run up to Jordan's Seeds to get some Floating Row Cover to put over the remaining green tomatoes. This will give us an extra 5 degrees of protection, hopefully enough for tonight. The green tomatoes should have a good chance of ripening with the sun predicted for next week. </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">In other news, last Thursday we had over 30 Carleton Footbal volunteers! You should have seen the field before and after-they made a HUGE dent in the weeds. You may ask, why weed now? The answer is because we do not want the weed seed in the soil for next season. Pigweed, the most prevalent weed at the farm, can stay viable for 20 years! Also worth noting is we delivered our first batch of fresh produce to the public schools as part of the Farm to School federal program. One pot meal<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">Many people ask me what I do with all the veggie-especially after a long day working and you want something quick and simple. Well, here's my idea of a quick, easy, and absolutely scrumptious meal-all in one pot!</div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/ca1027939224b0f8.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/ca1027939224b0f8.jpg?size=320" /></a></div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">After heading out to the farm, I come back with the bounty (above). Kale, eggs, corn, beets, zucchini, summer squash, potatoes, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, herbs. </div><br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/5d96cbcbd18312a9.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/5d96cbcbd18312a9.jpg?size=320" /></a> </div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">I chop up those that take longest to cook and throw them in the pot first with some olive oil-potatoes and squash. Then I'll throw in the onions and kale as I finish chopping them. </div><br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/6e5583fcd5664cc6.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/6e5583fcd5664cc6.jpg?size=320" /></a> </div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">I carefully chop the rest of the produce, taking care to avoid the cabbage loopers! An easy way to get htese out of the broccoli is to soak your head in cold, salty water. They'll float to the top in minutes</div><br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/351852700d635276.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/351852700d635276.jpg?size=320" /></a> </div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">Can't forget the herbs! I chop up rosemary, oregany, thyme, sage, and basil (not all pictured...)</div><br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/29e5bd27fb9b1147.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/29e5bd27fb9b1147.jpg?size=320" /></a> </div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">When the veggis are done, I move them to a side and throw the eggs on the other. Once they're done being scrambled, I'll mix it all together</div><br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/4f8680d07918d566.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/4f8680d07918d566.jpg?size=320" /></a> </div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">Okay, I liked, one pot and one pan. I chop up the beets, cauliflower and broccoli to be roasted together. It just takes 5-7 minutes under the broiler. I like my roasted veggies sprinkled with goat cheese from our goats!</div><br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/7e2b2981a25efc19.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://localhost:51409/99df9745afe43fe2708734acd99cdfe7/image/7e2b2981a25efc19.jpg?size=320" /></a> </div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">Can't forget the corn on the cob.</div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">Eating this feast with a good friend...life can't get much better.</div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">And dishes are a breeze!</div><br />

The hole is 12x18x9 with a walkout section/door. While we were standing on the ground before the hole was dug looking at the dimensions, it felt small. But standing in the hole...holy cow does it seem big! We are excited to continue construction. Next up, footings!<br />
<br />
We will post pictures soon.<br />
The root cellar construction is part of the following class:<br />
<br />
<h3>Build a Root Cellar with the SEEDS Farm August 20th 10am-5pm</h3><div class="entry"><a href="http://justfood.coop/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/storage_veggies.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2142" height="375" src="http://justfood.coop/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/storage_veggies.jpg" title="storage_veggies" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Interested in learning about root cellars? How about building your own root cellar? Join the SEEDS (Social Entrepreneurship, Environmental Design and Stewardship) Team in building a root cellar on their farm site! Learn about the benefits of root cellars, such as saving energy and extending the shelf life of local produce, while participating in the step-by-step building process. Work alongside local farmers and community members. The cellar will help to supply Northfield and the Food Shelf with local produce throughout the winter and has the potential to change the way our foodshed operates.<br />

Friday there was an independent film festival called <a href="http://www.freerangefilm.com/">Free Range Film Festival</a> at the <a href="http://web.me.com/anniedugan/Site/Welcome.html">Food Farm</a> in Wrenshal, just south of Duluth, MN. Scores of films ranging from seconds to hours, serious to hilarious, were shown in their hayloft in the beautiful country. Saturday morning was a fantastic farm tour of the Food Farm (pictures below), and Saturday night was the <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1&thid=1312deb17f899d42&mt=application/pdf&url=https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui%3D2%26ik%3D539dc3634c%26view%3Datt%26th%3D1312deb17f899d42%26attid%3D0.1%26disp%3Dsafe%26realattid%3Df_gq2y0bgg0%26zw&sig=AHIEtbSnw9XAWnvmoSe1oplGIJyVgj8nLg&pli=1">Young Farmers Mixer</a> at the S<a href="http://www.localharvest.org/spring-wind-farm-M43140">pring Wind Farm</a>, just a mile up the dirt road from our farm. It was put on by the Greenhorns, a national non-profit that supports and promotes young farmers. We feasted on delicious local produce, got to meet a lot of inspiring local, young farmers, and danced the night away square dance style in their barn. And Sunday of course was the mid-summer potluck at the SEEDS Farm! Phew, what a weekend!</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Though the real reason I (Becca) went to Wrenshal was to see their root cellar. The picture below is surprisingly the only picture I got of their 28x32 root cellar. It is of their squash room. The picture looks bare now, but at the end of fall, is full of tons of squash- literally. <a href="http://web.me.com/anniedugan/Site/Photos.html#12">Click here </a>for a picture of the squash room in the fall! The squash like it dry and warm, so this insulated squash dedicated room hangs out apart from the rest of the cellar, which is cold and dry. The potatoes hang out there in bins, washed and ready for the market/CSA share throughout the winter. Carrots, beets, parshnips, rutabaga, and cabbage like humid and cold conditions, so they are tucked away in plastic bags in bins in order to keep moisture in.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2a2tcFsWOsOSgPby9R1ANb4G1M2aObod_sIFO0vcOI3mH_p9tRpVQNryU1iXHYtBagoEG2lMtRx4Xe4ayqUgAxtSLg1XNJz-8Z3WHs9lE_mSchqivy-D0eQbFFQ0JbGO5IXU7dgQ69RQ/s1600/IMG_0153.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2a2tcFsWOsOSgPby9R1ANb4G1M2aObod_sIFO0vcOI3mH_p9tRpVQNryU1iXHYtBagoEG2lMtRx4Xe4ayqUgAxtSLg1XNJz-8Z3WHs9lE_mSchqivy-D0eQbFFQ0JbGO5IXU7dgQ69RQ/s320/IMG_0153.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The squash need a lot of ventilation-which these shelves provide!</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The root cellar at the Food Farm was incredible. The limiting factor for most root cellars is getting it cool enough in the fall. To deal with this, the FF blows in cold night air once the temperature is cooler outside than inside. After the cellar is cooled, it relies on the thermal heat to keep it from freezing. The ground will stay a steady 42 degrees. Cheapest refridgeration I can think of!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">.....though some crops like it cooler than 42. And some like it warmer... By blowing cold air from outside in and heating the squash room with a baseboard heater, their cellar is able to keep each room perfect for each crop. They only spend $200/year on electricity for this!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The SEEDS Farm is planning on building our own root cellar this summer, and we are realizing there is much more to building one than we thought! We're plugging away at the research, and are excited to start construction soon. The cellar will go into the hill by where the goats and chickens are now. Exact dimension are still to be determined. The construction will be part of a class we are teaching on August 20th. Our hope is to encourage a network of root cellars to be built, each dedicating a portion of their cellar to the food shelf. Our cellar will serve as a prototype, and hopefully with the accompanying business plan and detailed savings throughout the season (through extension of season), Northfield will be sprouting more root cellars soon!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Thoughts on pests and organic farmingWe have tomato blight-it's official. Thanks to communal farmer/community gardner Jenna for putting tomato blight on our radar! Without the heads up I'm not sure we would have caught it in time. Being new to tomato blight, we had a lot to learn in a short time. It's a fungus that spreads very fast, mostly in wet conditions. It manifests itself as black spots, eventually turning the leaf yellow and ultimately dying. It can devestate a whole crop fast. Tomato blight is responsible for the Irish potato -giving perspective of what we're up against. Last year it devestated a whole growing region in south east MN and northwest WI-it can spread quickly and do a lot of damage.<br />
<br />
What are we doing to combat it? Well first, we just had to laugh. It seems we have gotten every possible pest/disease imaginable. Alright, not every pest, but it does sure seem like it! One after the other, it's like we can never win. This year has been especially bad for pests for everyone. But anyways...to deal with the blight we are hand plucking every blighted leaf/branch, packaging it up, exporting it off the farm and burning it. We are getting a copper fungicide expidited to us tomorrow to spray on the plants and kill the fungus. Hopefully we can manage to save a portion of the tomatoes.<br />
<br />
Speaking of pests....we also have cabbage loopers. They're out of control! We are planning on spraying dipel df on them tomorrow. This is a gram positive bacteria that will interfere with the pest's DNA, hopefully killing it. This is an organic pesticide and is OMRI certified.<br />
<br />
The potato beatles also have spiraled out of control-go figure. We're goign to spray pyganic on them tomorrow as well. Pyganic is a derivative of the phyrntheum plant- a natural insecticide. We tried to grow our own pyryntheum, but it didn't grow well when we didn't water it...opps...<br />
<br />
All in all, this year has been a hard year to be an organic farmer. I (Becca) drive home from the farm past the fields of corn and soybeans and I think-geez, it would be so easy to spray for weeds, pests, and diseases! I could have it done in a heartbeat! Instead we struggle day after day trying to win the war against weeds and pests. But while on the farm, it's easy to remember why we do this. Not only is it fulfilling work, it's essential work. Everyone eats, and we must learn to provide for our hungry appetites appropriately in ecologically sustainable ways. There shouldn't even be an option. Government agricultural subsidies and incentives make it easy to be bad- to throw chemicals at our problems and hope they go away. But that will not cut it for the long term. <br />
<br />
I continue to be satisfied being an organic farmer despite the pests.SEEDS Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06466503799908659382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697748231257220095.post-75319436846192354752011-07-18T16:45:00.000-07:002011-07-18T16:46:33.919-07:00Seed Saver Pictures<div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuZNFZpMtYjA3td9VQN8lmPsAfiiMqs27WdJQMjnXQwDSteTxOBikY5YLqJjd9RamLmYy3ouqwYM7PtrIZrOAy9q_xiZMjWP2yl_pfNLl8A5XIxortatTZriUa4UsMNMJPyIi2EHRF_wM/s1600/IMG_0145.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuZNFZpMtYjA3td9VQN8lmPsAfiiMqs27WdJQMjnXQwDSteTxOBikY5YLqJjd9RamLmYy3ouqwYM7PtrIZrOAy9q_xiZMjWP2yl_pfNLl8A5XIxortatTZriUa4UsMNMJPyIi2EHRF_wM/s320/IMG_0145.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">The beautiful restored barn</div><br /><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKwEwIABg-opcvIlraNjkeXwcepYQkOyVVR-7_KyGLhIukod42Vr5Ts8kDIbcf-qLmB8tj3UnuHUMupbPC28HOxMcc_LnwzmnEhjQuTbDOUogfD4mswLegO166l5NumSDv7U2fuw6M7RY/s1600/IMG_0144.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKwEwIABg-opcvIlraNjkeXwcepYQkOyVVR-7_KyGLhIukod42Vr5Ts8kDIbcf-qLmB8tj3UnuHUMupbPC28HOxMcc_LnwzmnEhjQuTbDOUogfD4mswLegO166l5NumSDv7U2fuw6M7RY/s320/IMG_0144.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">Campsite where conference goers stayed the weekend-a very fun atmosphere</div><br /><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTIXwHrbABBK_Te0o6uBGfmqUGH-CM7QwZf8MuDtfsB0GvXA78kXwzd6SR1SJs7GV4nRuH9pHH170qcTB7xni-_9HsCL6JKZQcYd-eE5FkhyphenhyphenAuCqM4NXaXLlyzzxb5kbIajCW_Nu8S5TI/s1600/IMG_0142.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTIXwHrbABBK_Te0o6uBGfmqUGH-CM7QwZf8MuDtfsB0GvXA78kXwzd6SR1SJs7GV4nRuH9pHH170qcTB7xni-_9HsCL6JKZQcYd-eE5FkhyphenhyphenAuCqM4NXaXLlyzzxb5kbIajCW_Nu8S5TI/s320/IMG_0142.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">6 am sunshine!</div><br /><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTL66CtRJzem7ezWTzmNXgLWgiTc8ZqSl8oLwz1JIeKSg_XlVaKY2a5yUAfvWcptWiEEJY0aCg22uCWe64DR6L0eCoXP1t6rv7pki71cX8PvmvxriHqZdB3erjKSoWQ0bZfOutzCLV-YM/s1600/IMG_0138.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTL66CtRJzem7ezWTzmNXgLWgiTc8ZqSl8oLwz1JIeKSg_XlVaKY2a5yUAfvWcptWiEEJY0aCg22uCWe64DR6L0eCoXP1t6rv7pki71cX8PvmvxriHqZdB3erjKSoWQ0bZfOutzCLV-YM/s320/IMG_0138.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">Some of the isolation tents I talked of. <div class="MsoNormal">WARNING: LONG POST AHEAD </div><div class="MsoNormal">***I'll post pictures soon</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I just returned from a wonderful week at the Seed Saverās conference. For those of you who do not know, Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving heirloom seeds. Their heritage farm is in Decorah, Iowa, and this past weekend had their 31st annual conference and campout. I decided to go late Friday night for the day on Saturday, but after feeling so inspired after the first few workshops, I was bummed to only be staying for the day. It turns out the force of the cosmos was with me as I found a tent for the night and a ride home the next day and ended up staying an extra day.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The mission of Seed Savers is<span style="color: #494344; font-family: Georgia;"><b> āto save North America's diverse, but endangered, garden heritage for future generations by building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants, while educating people about the value of genetic and cultural diversity.ā </b></span>They do this by collecting heirloom seeds that have been passed down generation after generation, just like heirloom furniture or jewelry, planting them, growing them out to increase the population size, and saving them. Depending on the popularity, they may include them in their catalog of over 300 varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers for commercial sale or post them in their catalogue of over 10,000 varieties where members can peruse through, select a variety that entices them, grow for their own use and also to collect seed. </div><div class="MsoNormal">Iād like to share with you some of the interesting information I learned at the workshops I attended. I took notes at some, unless I was too engrossed in the lecturer!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: red;"><b>Chasing Chiles:</b></span> Kurt Friese, a chef, was one of three authors of the book, <i>Chasing Chilies: Hot spots along the pepper trail</i><span style="font-style: normal;">. The others were an ethno botanist and a biologist, and they spent months traveling through the world learning about Chile peppers. One thing that especially struck them along their travels was how each heirloom variety they encountered was connected to an amazing story. These varieties were passed down to them by their ancestors who were always carefully selecting the best of the crop and crossing them with other peppers for desirable traits. These varieties are not sold in seed catalogues, but are arguably the best available. Secondly, they were struck by how a single variety can manifest itself so differently according to different climates. I also learned of the way you can measure the āhotnessā of a pepper: on the scoville scale. A habanero for example, has a scoville value of 100,000-meaning it takes 100,000 g of water to wash 1 g of pepper away. Habanero peppers are the hottest native North American peppers and are hot hot hot. Jalapenos have a scoville value of 8,000 for comparison. The hottest pepper (of which I obtained three seeds of to plant this season!!!) is the Bhut Jolokia chili pepper, which has a scoville value of 1.5 million!</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: red;"><b>Dry Seed Cleaning</b></span>: such a nice old gentleman led this workshop from Maine, Will Bonsal (more on him later). He discussed the technique of saving seeds from dry plants. Iām not sure why this concept seemed so new to me, though I guess it reiterates how my generation has always grown up buying seeds from catalogues, oblivious to the fact that seeds can be saved. Iāve grown up in a time where farmers are persecuted for saving their seed, where by opening a seed packet, you āhereby agree to save no plant material or seed for future use.ā Iām not sure I completely understood where this seed magically appeared from, or that if people way back when wanted any seed, they had to grow their own. Anyways, Will went through the process of growing the plant to itās own specific point in time when the seed is mature (either when the fruit is ripe or dry) collecting the fruit and separating the seed from everything else. He showed us spinach which he had collected after it had bolted and dried on the stalk, thrashed it by stepping on it, removing the debris, then winnowing it-which consisted of putting it in a bucket and pouring it slowly in front of a fan which blew the light debris away leaving the heavy seed to fall on the floor. There is a lot more to it, but this is the basic story of saving seed. It then needs to be stored properly. Some seed needs to be dormant before it can be planted again, perhaps it needs to be fermented as in an animals stomach, maybe the endosperm needs to be scratched as if a bird chewed it, allowing the seed to emergeā¦etc. A hobby I can see myself getting into.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Biology and Ecology of seed saving: I cannot believe I didnāt know this information-especially being BIOLOGY major at St. Olaf. I guess when I learned this in high school; I didnāt care enough about plants then to remember the information. This lecture was amazing!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">My typed up notes: An heirloom is a plant, which has a history of being passed down within a family just like pieces of heirloom jewelry or furniture. Open pollinated plants are varieties that breed true seed. The fruit from this plant has seeds that will bear the exact same plant as the one it was grown on. This is good! Hybrids are a specific cross that is usually done by humans picking a desired trait from one plant and that of another and crossing them. Their resulting offspring (the F1 generation) are probably pretty neat if it is done correctly-though if you breed a F1 with an F1, those offspring will not breed true. That is the problem with big seed companies making these amazing hybrid plants. If you save the seed, you will not get the same plant that you started with! They make it impossible for you to save the seed so you have to keep going back to the same company and spend more money on seed.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Anyways, you want to save heirloom varieties for their cultural value which is worth preserving, because it provides variety and interest, it is essential to preventing the loss of genetic diversity, and because you can select plants for specific growing conditions. Youād save it for the same reason youād save a native language, or a panda bear.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">How are plants pollinated? By itself (if it has all the reproductive parts on one plant) or via an insect or wind (if the male and female reproductive parts are separated either within the plant or on different plants). Peas, beans, sollenacias are all examples of plants that have flowers with both male and female parts. They can pollinate themselves-they are called selfers. The pollen from the anther shakes when the plant rattles in the wind and lands on the stigma, right within the same flower. It goes down into the ovary and starts producing a fruit. Zucchini on the other hand, is an example of a fruit that is an outcrosser. One zucchini plant will have a couple male flowers and a couple female flowers. It takes an insect, such as a bee, to transfer pollen from the male flower to the female flower. (By the way, this provides an opportunity for cross breeding to happen naturally what if one bee gets pollen from one male flower on a plant and deposits on the female flower of another plant? They may or may not be the same variety-their resulting offspring would be hybrids!)</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">If you are growing for seed and want to maintain true seed, you have to be careful with cross-pollination. To prevent cp, plants are growing in isolation tents which keep insects out, are geographically separated to prevent wind cross pollination, or are hand pollinated (when a flower emerges, it is immediately covered with a bag. Pollen is hand smeared on the stigmas to ensure proper pollination). Corn and beets are both hand pollinated.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">There are also biannual plants, such as rutabagas turnips and beets. They grow in a season, die off, and then grow again in the same seasonā¦wait, that doesnāt sound right! We only get one beet plant in our Minnesota summersā¦.well that is because they originated in Afghanistan where the season was much longer. If we want to save seed from a beet in MN, we must grow the beet (not eat the bulb), dig up the beet before winter, store it in a root cellar so it doesnāt die from cold, replant it, then let it go to seed and collect that. Phew! A lot of work. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Ask for more details, Iād be happy to tell you more about monoecious, dioecious, self-incompatibility, etc.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;">There is such a thing as money that is too fast, companies that are too big, finance that is too complex. Therefore, we must sow our money down. Not all of it, of course, but enough to matter.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;">The 20th century was the era of buy low/sell high and wealth now/philanthropy laterāwhat one venture capitalist called āthe largest legal accumulation of wealth in history.ā The 21st century will be the era of nurture capital, built around principles of carrying capacity, care of the commons, sense of place and non-violence.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;">We must learn to invest as if food, farms and fertility mattered. We must connect investors to the places where they live, creating vital relationships and new sources of capital for small food enterprises.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;">Let us celebrate the new generation of entrepreneurs, consumers, and investors who are showing the way from making a killing to making a living.<o:p></o:p></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;">Paul Newman said, āI just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer who puts back into the soil what he takes out.ā Recognizing the wisdom of these words, let us begin rebuilding our economy from the ground up, asking; what would it be like if we invested 50% of our assets within 50 miles have where we live? What if there was a new generation of companies that gave away 50% of their profits? What if there was 50% more organic matter in our soil 50 years from now?<o:p></o:p></li>

</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: red;"><b>Keynote speaker:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Jeff McCormack on Oral histories: Connecting people plants and biodiversity: </b></span>With each seed is a story. Itās not just about the fruit that is grown, itās about how it got there, who used to grow it, in which conditions. He was influenced by the Ted Talk by Brene Brown on the power of vulnerability (<a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html">http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html</a>).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He talked of how stories are data with a soul, which they are responsible for the evolution of our culture, that saving seeds is about stories, about soulful relationships. He then told a few stories he had gathered from around the world, which accompanied the seeds he had found. He talked of how we have stopped telling stories, stopped talking to each other and listening to each other. The information we would have learned from these stories, we have resorted to reading how-to books and teaching ourselves. There is less sharing wisdom and more how to books. We are solitary readers and waters rather than sharing participants. What most struck me of his talk was that facts=knowledge, stories=wisdom. Jeff has also done research at the same research station on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas as I have-researching bush medicine. I remember going out with Mr. Forbes, the last ancestor of the last medicine woman on the island and seeing local remedies for each ailment.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: red;"><b>Barn Dance: </b></span>Iām not sure if this could have been any more picturesque. They provided beer from a local brewery and wine from a local vineyard and we danced the night away in the hayloft of the refurbished barn. Old couples that still knew the real way to dance showed us the ropes as the fiddle band strung away. The mist set in over the valley we were in. I think I was the youngest one there; I enjoyed watching and participating in some of the contra like dances. I went to bed when I was tired, as I had no watch, no phone, and no concept of time. I felt like I had stepped back into the good days.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

It was wonderful to get out in the community to be social and connect with other local farmers. At this market we had a variety of produce including kale, lettuce heads, loose leaf salad mix, spicy micro greens, herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley), endive, kohlrabi, and onions for sale. We had a blast at the market and look forward to having a stand there each Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., right along the river. You should definitely stop by, it's an incredible event!<br />

They were so kind as to give us a tour of their farm and answer our many questions in exchange for a couple hours of work. We helped them unroll bales of hay between rows of tomato for mulch. With six people working on each bale, we were very successful and efficient! We feel very grateful to have such a supportive and knowledgeable farming community around us-we definitely have a lot to learn from those who have been doing this for a great portion of their lives. <br />

<b>Other news from the farm:</b><br />
1. We have the goats grazing in an electric fence area. We had to contain them because they just couldn't stay away from our veggies! They're getting used to it and are happier in the fence than being cooped up all day.<br />
2. The lilies have bloomed! They add beautiful colors to the farm.<br />
3. The pigs are loving their muddy pig pen. I found them munching happily away on some freshly harvested weeds.<br />
4. Our third CSA pickup was today. We're having a blast interacting with our CSA members and are excited to share the bounty. Today we had assorted greens, herbs (cilantro, sage, dill, basil, mint), onions, jalapeƱo peppers, kale, and kohlrabi to send home with our members.<br />
5. The chickens are enjoying their freedom from the coop. They get to graze freely during the day and we're encouraging them to eat the potato beetle larvae off the potato plants. They sort of pay attention to this...<br />
6. This is a shot of fresh produce from our farm (onions, kohlrabi, garlic scapes). <br />

The north plot is finally looking like something! We planted carrots, beets, beans, greens (in the shade of the corn), turnips, rutabagas, summer squash, and cucumbers.<br />

We spray each plant with a hand pump sprayer, coating each plant with the milky looking substance. This organic residue is very abrasive to the pests, and when they eat the plant or crawl around, the clay scratches the pest and their contents seep out, slowly dehydrating them to death. We've heard it works quite well! We hope to see results in about a week. Though with the unexpected rain today, a lot of our hard work yesterday ran off....bummer.</div>SEEDS Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06466503799908659382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697748231257220095.post-37840740293993655162011-06-22T19:57:00.000-07:002011-06-22T19:57:49.616-07:00Our First CSA Box Pickup DayToday marked the first official CSA box handout to our full and and half share members. We managed to harvest endive, lettuce, green onions, herbs, and kale in between unfortunate bouts of rain. Our chickens managed to lay enough eggs on their first full day on the farm to give each member a half dozen eggs to take home. <br />

Today we welcomed 35 egg-laying hens to the farm. We herded the majority into their newly built coop, but unfortunately ended up chasing 6 escaped chickens for about 2 hours. So far it seems as though the chickens are settling in and making themselves at home. We look forward to providing farm fresh eggs to our communal and CSA members this summer!<br />

</tbody></table>Today we also spent some time investigating the pests that are quite fond of our cucumber, squash, melon, and potato plants. We have researched a variety of "solutions" to combat these pests, so now our next task is to experiment. Rae, a very knowledgeable and helpful farmer from L&R Poultry, suggested using a kaolin clay spray on and around the plant to ward off pests. The spray creates a film on the plant which repels the pest trying to chow down. An example of one of our nasty pests is the potato beetle. <br />

I (Becca) have been gone from the farm only 48 hours but so much has changed already. Here are a few pics of recent endeavors:</div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><br /></div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy8-p47mR9MhI008IgazXwS398gcW_TomAAOGnKakpIe8PTSutFk-ZxDNiakHCurV1i68pcz7v21Xo0kwuPfYe5b4kanAGafYYJM_n_7Lg8sA29GnItWj_fMHmhDb6Z3YgqDZz4Kiuzeg/s1600/IMG_0007.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy8-p47mR9MhI008IgazXwS398gcW_TomAAOGnKakpIe8PTSutFk-ZxDNiakHCurV1i68pcz7v21Xo0kwuPfYe5b4kanAGafYYJM_n_7Lg8sA29GnItWj_fMHmhDb6Z3YgqDZz4Kiuzeg/s320/IMG_0007.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a></div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"> Goats milk and sweet strawberries! What a dynamic duo. Tonight I plan to make a milk shake and I can't wait. Feel free to help yourself to strawberries out at the farm when you're out there. New ones are ripening every day. And if you are ever interested in helping milk the goats, let us know. It sure is fun.</div><br /><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7QtK5H3abpzbTor9vKK0RFr58QFXaTrbmEinWN8iyECd2Eqb9rZ3I85HJ8x5PsNVOBB6icUFxXeGp93V31LvnQp2pIohwmnE00huo2o-WaQ1kM-7_est7nLvFlCU8zxNGZOuSbzsaOwM/s1600/IMG_0002.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7QtK5H3abpzbTor9vKK0RFr58QFXaTrbmEinWN8iyECd2Eqb9rZ3I85HJ8x5PsNVOBB6icUFxXeGp93V31LvnQp2pIohwmnE00huo2o-WaQ1kM-7_est7nLvFlCU8zxNGZOuSbzsaOwM/s320/IMG_0002.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">The immense amount of land under cultivation calls for diverse weeding strategies. One way to reduce time weeding is to suppress them with straw. This came from the farm last year and will eventually cover the solenacias and brassicas. It's a time investment to put it out now, but we'll be thanking ourselves later. When we spread it, we must make sure it's on thick enough so the weeds can't find too much sunlight.</div><br /><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihQv9P6gS3BWcAxGTGfD_9lMUdoPB5BntijjpNqFJw7hyWeyTe50J3cnLfaX-j1Dj9Dl1qCko0AsWek4rMG3_xGWUVxR2I2H83j6tCKDQm6j7i-znphG-j78gJw6_tRBJ5NTpr4Gf_biM/s1600/IMG_0001.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihQv9P6gS3BWcAxGTGfD_9lMUdoPB5BntijjpNqFJw7hyWeyTe50J3cnLfaX-j1Dj9Dl1qCko0AsWek4rMG3_xGWUVxR2I2H83j6tCKDQm6j7i-znphG-j78gJw6_tRBJ5NTpr4Gf_biM/s320/IMG_0001.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> </div><div style="text-align:center;margin:0px auto 10px;">Early Friday morning we decided to raid the downtown cardboard recycling box. One huge trailer load later, this is how far we got.
